After half a century of service to VUMC, the Department of Health Policy is hosting a retirement symposium to honor Professor Wayne Ray, PhD, celebrating his decades of research and contributions to the medical center and its research.
The symposium will be held Monday, Dec. 9, 2024 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Light Hall 202. The symposium will feature four separate sessions, focused on areas where Ray made significant advancements in pharmacoepidemiology research or to the academic enterprise at VUMC.
The first session from 9-9:30 a.m. will feature Drs. Marie Griffin and Bill Schaffner, who will reflect on the early years of pharmacoepidemiology research at VUMC, and Ray’s influential role in its growth and development.
“We are excited to have the opportunity to celebrate Dr. Wayne Ray's many contributions to Vanderbilt and the research community as a whole,” said David Stevenson, PhD, Mike Curb Chair and Professor of Health Policy. “Please join us to recognize Wayne's many accomplishments and to wish him the best in retirement. The first session from 9-9:30 a.m. will feature Drs. The second session, from 9:30-10:30 a.m. will feature Drs. William Cooper, Cornelius Vanderbilt Professor of Pediatrics and Health Policy, Cecelia Chung, Professor of Medicine at the University of Miami, and Christianne Roumie, Professor of Internal Medicine and Pediatrics and Director of the Vanderbilt Masters of Public Health Program.
Ray helped establish the MPH program at VUMC more than 30 years ago, which has expanded its foucs and reach, and now includes students involved in epidemiology research, policy and global health.
The third session session, 10:45-11:45 a.m. will feature speakers from the Department of Health Policy who will reflect on Ray’s contributions to cutting edge research and surveillance methods.
The keynote presentation, from 12-1 p.m., will feature Dr. Samy Suissa, Distinguished James McGill Professor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at McGill University, a longtime colleague and friend of Ray’s.
Suissa will present his talk titled, “Repurposing old drugs for new indications: The good, the bad and the ugly”
